Have you ever been in a shopping mall or on a college campus and seen a person who appears to be the size of somebody in grade school but, when you take a closer look, seems a lot older? A dwarf is a short-statured person whose adult height is 4 feet 10 inches or under. Dwarfism can be caused by any of more than conditions, most of which are genetic and present at birth. Most people with dwarfism have a change in any of several specific genes that interfere with the normal development of cartilage and bones. Since the longest bones in the human body are located in the arms and legs, this interference in normal bone development most commonly results in shorter limbs, which leads to short stature. Do all dwarfs look alike? Not necessarily. All dwarfs are short, but different types of dwarfism have different causes and different physical traits.

A mother whose husband and two children are little people has hit back at cruel strangers who point, laugh and take photos of the family. At 5ft 4in, Heather Smith, 34, towers over her husband Paul, 40, who is just 4ft tall and, like their children — 3ft 7in Jack, 13 and 3ft 2in Erin, nine — has a form of dwarfism, known as pseudoachondroplasia. After falling in love on holiday, Ms Smith was aware the painful condition may one day affect her children.
Yet she did not anticipate the the extent of the jibes her family, from Nottingham, would face, with her youngest even being called a ‘stupid little midget’. Ms Smith is speaking out about ignorant behaviour and calling for a change in attitudes to little people. She said: ‘We need more education and awareness so that everybody can be accepted.

Marylou Naccarato was an agent for the Internal Revenue Service for decades before she became a clinical sexologist. She was a speaker at their conference earlier this month in San Diego where she broke through conservative boundaries to talk the ins and outs of sex, intimacy, and lovemaking with the various limitations that may come with life as a person of short stature. Born and raised in Los Angeles to a Sicilian Catholic father and a Moroccan Jewish mother, Naccarato found herself in the sex counseling and education field by accident.
Although she was working for the IRS, she had always wanted to be a social worker, until one night when she watched a program on sexual health on a cable network. Married to an average-sized man at the time, Naccarato and her husband adapted their sex lives because she had issues with her hip—like most Little People do—leading to issues with straddling.

At this place where I work as a security guard there is this woman midget that I have known for a couple of years. We don’t work for the same company, but run into one another quite a bit, eat lunch together in common areas, etc Now, she’s good looking for a midget. In fact, if you were to just see a picture of her head you’d think she is a pretty attractive woman.
Maybe a 7 or 8 out of We’ve gotten along real well, but I’m 6′ 1″, so if we get serious that’d look pretty weird, right? Also, she has some other issues besides needing a decent vertical leap to reach the top button on the vending machine. She has diabetes that she takes medicine for. I’m not sure I’m ready for the responsibility of dating a diabetic midget.
She’s also known to have a bad temper. I’d hate to go out with her and it not work out, then have her go into a rage and her sugar skyrocket. If I have to call over a lifeless, comatose midget, you know who’s going to get all the blame. Still, she has good qualities. She’s a Carolina fan and hates taters.
‘I fell in love and married a man with dwarfism’
One day, somehow I happened to overhear a conversation of some youngsters and soon I could easily make out that they were cracking jokes without realising that they were indulging in snatching away the humanity of some, just because they were physically unique individuals. I realised how cruel and heartless we as human beings have become. I felt ashamed to be a part of this so called civilised and progressive society. Dwarfism has always been strongly related to fables and boorish entertainment.

The best thing you can call our daughter is “Rebecca” or “Becky. Everything else — “little person,” “LP,” “dwarf,” “person with dwarfism,” “achon,” “hey you,” — falls somewhere in between. Before we started attending LPA meetings, my wife Barbara and I would have guessed that dwarf and “midget” were equally offensive or inoffensive , and that little person , a term with which we were vaguely aware, was probably the most acceptable.
It turns out to be a whole lot more complicated than that. Once, at an LPA parents’ meeting, I heard an average-size mother say that she nearly burst into tears of rage the first time someone referred to her dwarf child as a “midget”. I wondered. Before her daughter had been born, I couldn’t imagine that this mother was any more capable of parsing dwarf and “midget” than we had been. Within the dwarf community, the response to what is sometimes called “the M-word” is visceral; but, obviously, it is also learned.
To me, it makes more sense to educate people than it does to excoriate them for a violation of political correctness that they don’t even know they are committing. Dwarf is an ancient word dating back many centuries. In the unabridged Oxford English Dictionary OED , the meaning of dwarf is straightforward and neutral: “A human being very much below the ordinary stature or size. By contrast, “midget” was coined only in , and its definition goes to the heart of why it is so deeply unpopular: “An extremely small person; spec.
Then, too, the root of “midget” is midge.

To be clear: this is not about dwarfs like myself being more likely to commit crime than average height people. A couple of years ago, a man stopped me while walking in Camden Market:. Is that a play or a musical? The man looked at me askance, like it was reasonable to assume there was only one dwarf, whose job it must be to travel the world, popping up in different places on a timetable so tight it would need Doc Brown and a flux capacitor.

Growing up in New Jersey, Genovese said she endured bullies and stares, and was even submitted to humiliating medical exams that made her feel insignificant and devalued. But Genovese, who is 4-feet 3-inches tall, now enjoys a long and happy marriage with Bill, who is 5-foot The couple has two average-sized children. The world of little people has historically held a deep-rooted distrust for taller people — and rightly so.
Society has relegated dwarfs to circus side-shows and comedy, treating them as if they were subhuman. But the bias worked both ways. In the past, many little people frowned on dating averaged-sized people, sometimes fearing that those with sexual fetishes would exploit them. But now, “attitudes have changed,” according to the Little People of America LPA , an organization that provides support for those with more than forms of dwarfism.
Just recently, the organization launched a PSA in advance of October’s Dwarfism Awareness Month with this message: “We are professionals, we are students, we are advocates,” said Smith. In her memoir, “Nothing Short of Joy,” Genovese writes about her struggle with crushingly low self-esteem and depression. But after two pivotal life events — finding self-help books and a injury that led her to writing a memoir — she was able to overcome the self-loathing and embrace her life with joy.
And after meeting her husband Bill at a holistic fair where they were both volunteers, Genovese realized she was “worth loving.

Eugene Grant, a writer and activist for the Restricted Growth Association RGA , shared a thread on Twitter about the language people use when talking about people with dwarfism. Following on from that, Grant talked more generally about how people with dwarfism are addressed and referred to.

View your child’s medical records and schedule appointments through our secure, online portal, day or night. There’s been a lot of discussion over the years about the proper way to refer to someone with dwarfism. Many people who have the condition prefer the term “little person” or “person of short stature. For most, “midget” definitely is not.
But here’s an idea everyone can agree on: Why not simply call a person with dwarfism by his or her name? Being of short stature is only one of the characteristics that make a little person who he or she is. If you’re the parent or loved one of a little person, you know this to be true. More than well-described conditions are known to cause short stature in a child. Most are caused by a spontaneous genetic change mutation in the egg or sperm cells prior to conception.
Others are caused by genetic changes inherited from one or both parents. Depending on the type of condition causing the short stature, it is possible for two average-size parents to have a child with short stature, and is also possible for parents who are little people to have an average-size child. What prompts a gene to mutate is not yet clearly understood.
